How steps become calories
Walking burns roughly 0.04 calories per step for a 70 kg (154 lb) person, and the cost scales with body weight — heavier walkers burn more per step because they're moving more mass. This calculator applies that weight adjustment to your step count, so 10,000 steps is worth about 400 calories at 70 kg but closer to 470 at 180 lb. That per-step figure is consistent with the walking energy cost you'd get from METs in the Compendium of Physical Activities; pace and hills nudge the number up or down a little, but step count times body weight captures most of the picture. It's an estimate for planning, not a medical measurement.
Worked example. A 180 lb walker is 180 ÷ 2.205 = 81.6 kg. For 10,000 steps: 10,000 × 0.04 × (81.6 ÷ 70) = 10,000 × 0.04 × 1.166 ≈ 467 calories. The same 10,000 steps burn about 400 calories for a 154 lb person — lighter body, less mass to move.
Calories burned by step count and body weight

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | 168 | 201 | 233 | 266 |
| 7,500 | 253 | 301 | 350 | 399 |
| 10,000 | 337 | 402 | 467 | 531 |
| 12,500 | 421 | 502 | 583 | 664 |
| 15,000 | 505 | 603 | 700 | 797 |
Calories = steps × 0.04 × (weight in kg ÷ 70), rounded. Real burn varies with pace, terrain and fitness; this is a planning estimate, not a medical measurement.
